What is Shelby
Shelby is a decentralized, high-performance object storage protocol specifically designed for demanding read-heavy workloads, particularly in AI, streaming, and real-time Web3 applications. Co-developed by Aptos Labs and Jump Crypto, it delivers cloud-grade speed with sub-second reads and low-latency global access through a dedicated fiber network.
The project features a single global namespace, allowing data to be stored once and read from anywhere without expensive replication or high egress fees typical in traditional cloud storage. Every read is cryptographically verifiable, embedding ownership, provenance, consent, and access rights directly into the data itself.
Shelby uses an S3-compatible API for easy integration, while remaining chain-agnostic and primarily coordinated on the Aptos blockchain for fast settlement and verification. It introduces programmable access controls, built-in payments for reads, and incentives that turn static data into monetizable assets (e.g., pay-per-view content or AI pipelines). The system prioritizes economical scaling for large-scale AI workloads, avoiding punitive costs as usage grows. Currently in Early Access on testnet, Shelby aims to become the verifiable global storage layer powering the next generation of decentralized, data-intensive applications.
