What is XMTP

XMTP is a secure messaging protocol and decentralized communication network that provides a means for blockchain accounts to send and receive messages. XMTP provides a messaging service via a network of nodes operated by independent entities, to reduce reliance on singular providers, where:

• Participants can authenticate with blockchain accounts to send and receive messages that are encrypted by default through any compatible client app.
• A user's inbox is portable across client apps.
• Abuse is mitigated by ensuring senders have met required criteria.
• Nodes are incentivized to operate in the interest of maintaining a healthy network.

We designed XMTP to be a means of communication that is privacy-preserving, permissionless, decentralized, and resistant to abuse. We maintain that over time it must remain simple to use by people and straightforward for developers to build with.
