Swiss Payment Forum 2026: When AI Makes Payments: Who Will Control the Future of Payments?

Until now, people have decided when and how to pay. In the future, these decisions could increasingly be prepared or even made autonomously by AI agents – for example, when searching for, comparing or purchasing products and services. At the same time, fraud is increasingly spreading across different payment systems and is becoming harder to detect within a single system. Where will trust be established in the future? Who will take responsibility? And who will control the customer interface?

The first AI agents are already being integrated into digital shopping and payment processes. This raises the question of how banks and payment service providers will redefine their roles in an increasingly automated payment ecosystem.

These developments will be at the heart of the Swiss Payment Forum, taking place on 16 and 17 November 2026 in Zurich. Decision-makers from banks, fintechs, payment service providers, regulatory authorities and technology companies are expected to attend and discuss the next stages of development in the payments industry.

“Over the past few years, the industry has focused primarily on making payments faster and more convenient. Now, a more fundamental question is emerging: who will actually decide whether a payment is made? As soon as AI agents independently prepare or initiate payments, banks and payment service providers will need to fundamentally rethink trust, identity, liability and fraud prevention,” says Nicole von Mulert, Event Director at Vereon AG.

The agenda will cover topics including agentic AI, fraud prevention across different payment systems, instant payments, Verification of Payee, and European initiatives for interoperable payment solutions. The focus will be on their practical implications for banks, payment service providers, merchants and regulatory authorities.

Confirmed speakers include representatives from the Swiss National Bank, Kellerhals Carrard, TWINT, Vipps MobilePay, Bizum, Mastercard, Visa, Netcetera, Worldline and SIX, among others.
