What is Overlay
Overlay is a protocol that enables users to trade data streams, starting with DeFi price feeds. The aim of Overlay is to make any data streams tradable; from NFT floor prices to The Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation of the Universe; from BTC/USDC to weather forecasts in your town.
Users can take long or short positions with leverage on the value of a data stream. This requires locking up a native ERC 20 token, OVL, in the stream’s market contract.
All PnL is denominated in OVL.
Overlay looks to recreate the dynamics of trading, but without counterparties. Thus, it solves the liquidity problems which plague similar systems like cash-settled futures, exchanges/OTC trading venues.
End Goal - Overlay is conceived as just that: an overlay on the preexisting world. It allows you to win (and lose) on financial, political, natural, and social markets.
Currently, the protocol is governed by PlanckCat DAO (PCD). The PCD is for Overlay contributors to participate in Overlay Protocol via PCD NFTs on Arbitrum, even if the protocol and OVL token is only available on Ethereum at the moment.
